âAre we on our land?â Darcie was peering around. âWho built this place? Itâs amazingââ
She reached my side.
And came face to face with Grisel.
Everyone paused for a split second before Darcie shrieked.
âOh, my. Please silence thisâ¦person!â
I wondered what Grisel wanted to call her.
I grabbed Darcieâs arm. âItâs okay. Itâs okay,â I murmured. âThis is the moon garden.â
âWhat theâ¦drat the cat, Naomi! What am I looking at?â
Grisel cleared her throat. âI think you mean whoââ
Darcie shrieked again, but lower this time, and she quickly clapped a hand over her mouth. âYouâre alive â oh, my god, thatâs what I thought I saw, but it canât be, right?â
She turned to me with wide eyes and a mouth that resembled a perfect âoâ. Which was probably the same look Iâd worn when I first saw this place.
I felt a little faint. This wasnât supposed to happen. This was so not in the plan.
âWhat are you doing here?â
âWhat are you doing here?â she returned. âI saw you scurrying off into the woods. I wanted to see what was up.â
âHow did you get inside the fence?â
âWhat is this, the inquisition? Iâm still stuck on our tree-person here.â She raised a hand toward Grisel. âNo offense.â
âDarcie, meet Grisel. Grisel, meet Darcie. Sheâs my cousin and another of Nannaâs grandchildren.â
âSheâd better be. If not, Iâd have to report this breach to the Day Court.â
âNo, please donât tell them, Grisel. I donât need Aisling to have any more reasons to dislike me.â
âWhoâs Aisling?â Darcie had crossed her arms and was turning in a slow pivot, peering into the garden. It was weird to think about how it looked that first time. Iâd grown used to the clusters of white blooms glowing under the open sky. Theyâd be even brighter at the full moon.
I tried to ignore the sinking feeling in my gut. âWill you explain a bit to her?â I asked Grisel. âOr do we need to call Bramm toâ¦you knowâ¦â
Bramm the leprechaun could erase short-term human memories. If he got here fast, he could remove Darcieâs knowledge of the garden and her life â my life â wouldnât be affected by what sheâd seen here tonight.
âBramm is still in the otherworld. Heâs too far away to help us.â The dryad frowned.
âThat is so weird.â Darcie pointed at Griselâs features in a motion more reminiscent of the five-year-old she was raising than a grown woman.
âIt is not. She frowns a lot,â I told my cousin.
âDoes she everâ¦you know, come out of the tree?â
âI, young human, am right here. Please donât speak about me like I canât hear you.â
âDid she just call me young?â Darcie raised a brow at me.
âYou are young.â
âVery young.â Griselâs frown deepened. âAnd yes, I can exit the tree any time I like.â
âSo you do?â
Griselâs limbs gave the impression of a shrug. âNot often, no.â
âGriselâs roots are tapped deep. Sheâs able to bring messages from the otherworld throughââ
Darcie threw up her hands. âUm, um, um. Not sure I can handle this. Am I dreaming?â
âNope. Not dreaming.
